Airplanes in Utah

One of the things that drives me crazy is when I don't sleep.  Last night was just tedious because I could not sleep!  We had planned to go mountain biking today, but I was too tired.  Instead we decided to drive down and check out the Red Cliffs Recreation Area.  It's closed!  They didn't just close the campground, they've removed access to the entire area.  There was a park ranger putting tickets on the cars that were parked outside of the tunnels under the freeway.  Very disappointing.
Jim is a fan of small airports.  We went out to look at the Hurricane airport.  It's surprisingly large.  They have hangars and gas.  Is this not a lovely little airplane?  It's a Cessna 310.  It's a very nice light twin.

The one on the left is a Piper Cherokee of some sort and the other one is a Mooney.

I spotted a sign for the Sky Ranch development of luxury housing three miles down the road.  We headed out there to see what constituted luxury out in the middle of nowhere.  It's a fly in neighborhood.  That's their runway.  It has lights, but no fuel.

Many of the houses have hangars, some of the hangars are very large.

These are community hangars not connected to anyone's house.

All the houses with hangars, as well as these buildings, have taxi ways to the main run way.

They're huge structures, some had plane parking as well as Class A parking.

Another view of the valley and the air strip.  It's pretty out there, but it's out there.

We went for a walk later, a sunbeam was painting one of the pointy rocks in Virgin.

The families are bringing in wood by the truckload.  We'll be closing up the RV soon to keep the smoke out.  I really and truly hope that the fire starters go home tomorrow so we can leave the windows open.  Last night was bad, tonight is going to be worse.

  1. Oh that's too bad Red Cliffs was closed, it is a neat little park. Hans just read it's only closed for a few months to upgrade visitor areas.

That fly in neighborhood is a hoot! I think we drove by it too.
