Out of the Heat

We are finally out of the heat. We're in Lone Pine where it was windy, but temperatures are much nicer.
I took this last night, it was a pretty sunset.  There was a blazing pink behind the trees, but the camera couldn't see it.

There was construction on US395 today.  There was a flagger, and traffic was stopped in one direction and then the other.  Up front, there is a lead car controlling over all speed.  Notice the white car in the right lane.  He came zooming up the right side, trying to butt in line and jump the queue.  The dark car up the road (in the right lane) eventually forced his way back into the left lane.  What is wrong with people?  Did their mothers not teach them that one does not cut in line; that one waits in the queue like a civilized person?  Eventually one of the semi trucks behind us moved out and straddled the yellow line and put and end to that sort of driving.

We're in Lone Pine for three nights.  It's not nearly enough, but we're actually on a slow transit to Oregon and then Washington.  Planning was also hampered by not knowing when we would be leaving.  Those are the Eastern Sierras in front of us.

See the zig zag road in the far distance?  That's the road up to Horseshoe Meadows.  It's a campground at 10,000 feet.

I don't think we're going to do anything really strenuous here.  We thought about disregarding my doctor's orders against steep hiking and do Whitney Portal, but I really don't want to rupture my Achilles.  We'll be back, the trail will be there.

  1. Smart decision to not hike. Make a plan to return next year. We had wind and rain last night so we're only going to be in the 80s today. Hot again by the weekend but it's nice to have a break.

  2. Yep, that trail's not going anywhere...good decision.

Glad to see you are out of the heat, what a relief!

  4. It seems that bad driving habits are universal, and trucks also do that here when they get cheesed off with people butting in. I'm enjoying plotting your route on Google maps and looking at the distances you have to travel makes me realize just what a small island we are. Bill Bryson’s book title is very apt.

    1. I had to look up Bill Bryson. He's an amazingly prolific writer. If my Nook will speak to the internet here, I'm going to download A Walk in the Woods.

  5. The trails on top of Horseshoe Meadow are pretty flat. The road going up there was not open yet when we were there a few weeks ago but I would think it is by now. We missed the construction on 395 but it was going on on Whitney Portal Rd. Enjoy your new scenery!
