Grand Sierra Casino and RV Park

While in Reno we stayed at the Grand Sierra Casino and RV Park.  I watch a fair amount of Law and Order, so when I see "GSR" my mind immediately goes to gun shot residue.  Which is what we took to calling the casino.

I have mixed emotions about the RV park.  It's a parking lot.  The roads are paved, but they're in disrepair and need some maintenance.  Sites are paved, but the concrete is cracked, and they also need maintenance.  You will need to level.  The pull throughs are not long enough to keep your towed vehicle attached to the RV.  Power was good.  The water is not particularly good tasting and you will need a regulator because the pressure is very high.  I have no data on the laundry or restrooms.  Verizon 4G was good.

There are trains.  There is a nearby airport.  There is noise.  I found it difficult to sleep because of said noise.

There is an attached casino if you are so inclined.

There is also the attraction of "over water golf."  People stand on those fake grass mats and try to hit the islands in the "bay."  The bay is actually a storm water retention pond.

The advantage to the GSR is the location.  It's just off of I80, easy off, easy on.  It's close to a Costco, Trader Joe's and REI.  We managed to get to all three locations after the short drive down from Winnemucca.  Visually it is totally and completely unappealing, as is most of Reno.  The Sparks Marina RV park is nicer looking, but is poorly placed for provisioning.  So, for an overnight it's tolerable, but that's about it.

It's all I80!  It's almost all nice road.  It was a serene drive, much better than the road to Winnemucca.

New Frontier RV Park

While we were in Winnemucca, we stayed at the New Frontier RV Park.  It's a nice park.
Power is good, water pressure is good.  Interior roads are paved.  Each site has a picnic table.  Utilities are grouped together mid-site.  We had 3 bars of 4G LTE, and it was fairly quick.  They do offer wifi, but I can't comment.  I have no data on rest rooms or laundry. Satellite reception was excellent.

These are bunk houses.  Each building has three units with a bed, bathroom, small frig and microwave.  Companies rent them for their crews when extra people are brought in to the area.  There are a LOT of these buildings.

GPS to the RV park was not so good.  If you're coming from US99 south bound, there is not an on ramp to I80.  You'll have to drive to E Winnemucca Blvd, go through town, get on I80 east bound and then get off at exit 180.  After that, just follow their signs.  We would return for an overnight.

Mountain Home, ID to Winnemucca, NV

Today's route was I80 to Idaho 55 to US95.  Idaho 55 is only 17 miles long, but it's obnoxious.  The road surface is rough, and there are stop lights.  US95 was ok, it goes through Idaho, Oregon and Nevada.  The road surface varies by state.  It was a noisy drive, over all.  I am a little frazzled from all of the road rumble.

In Oregon the road straightens out and stays that way for about 50 miles.

Given that we started in Mountain Home, and we're heading to Chowchilla, this is pretty much the only direct route.  The downside to US95 is that there is not one single passing lane.  We spent a long time behind this over sized load.

Jim would prefer not to drive US95 again, but as I said, it's the only route available unless you're far enough east to take US93.

Mountain Home RV Resort

While in Mountain Home, we stayed at the Mountain Home RV Resort. This is a delightful park.  We were on a 90 foot, very level concrete site.

Power is good, water pressure is good.  Interior roads are paved and very wide.   Some sites have trees that provide shade, those are generally shorter sites.  Each site has a picnic table.  Utilities are grouped together mid-site.  We have 2 bars of 4G LTE, but it's not too awful.  They do offer wifi, but I can't comment.  The laundry room is very nice.  I have no data on rest rooms. 
This RV park is very easy to get to off the freeway.  There is a decent Pilot on the same exit.  There is much retail within a mile of the park.  This is an excellent overnight, and if we find ourselves in Mountain Home again, we would stay here.

Spending Time at Idaho Wrecker Sales

Today we went over to IWS Motorcoaches to look at a Super C.  This is the Renegade Classic, it's 40.5 feet long, which sounds like a lot until you realize that a fair amount of that length is eaten up by the cab of the truck.  It's a Freightliner Chassis with a Detroit Diesel engine.  It has mass quantities of horse power and torque, none of which I remember.
Fit and finish are really good.  They use real wood in the cabinets and not the fake wood so many RVs have gone to.  Their furniture is good, also.  Every Class A we've looked at so far would require the immediate ejection of all furniture.

All fluid levels are easily accessible.

It's pretty inside.  That's a porcelain tile floor.  There are choices a new owner can make in the configuration.  We would not want the computer desk and chair, my recliner would go there.  One could have a propane oven, but then one would have to sacrifice storage.

Ultimately, I don't think it would work for us.  Not enough storage.  Jim would have to get rid of all of his clothes so that mine would fit.  It does not appear to be a sacrifice he's willing to make.  There is, however, a lot of storage underneath. 

While at IWS we talked to Marty who knows his product backwards and forwards.  He basically conducted a class on the differences in chassis choices, the various transmissions and we did not stump him with any of our questions.  Few RV salespersons really know anything anymore.  It's just annoying.

They had this up on a screen in the back.  They told all employees we were coming and to be nice to us.  That's nice.

So, the search continues.  I'm really hoping that we get to be too rickety for the full time life style before our current RV wears out.  We haven't seen anything that we like as much as our current bus.  Despite her little quirks and foibles, she's the best so far.
