Life in These United States

Greetings and salutations.

Currently there are two major issues with the food supply.  Taylor Farms has received the most attention here.  The recall of contaminated bagged salad was withdrawn after the owner gave 47 a bunch of money.  Taylor Farms is everywhere.

Taylor Farms operates under these names:
Earthbound Farms, Eat Smart,
Walmart: Marketside,
Target: Good & Gather,
Kroger: Simple Truth, Simple Truth Organic,
Aldi: Little Salad Bar and Simply Nature,
Whole Foods Market: 365 by Whole Foods ,
Safeway / Albertsons: O Organics and Signature Select,
Publix: GreenWise,
Costco: Kirkland Signature (select packaged salad and produce items)
They also sell under their own label, and there is a lot of it on the shelves.

Federal data reveals U.S. foodborne illness cases are up nearly 400% this year compared with the recent annual average.

The FDA also released a warning about salmonella tainted eggs that have the potential to be fatal if not cooked sufficiently. Eggs should be cooked until firm, 160F. The 2026 Salmonella egg recall by Midwest Poultry Services involves plant/identifying codes P1950 or 084962,
and best-by dates from July 20 to August 17, 2026.

Screw worms are also with us, as well.

Last Friday we went out to the alternate trail head we're using until the bridge replacement completes.  We were hoping to make it to the lake.  Alas, alack, that was not to be.

We talked to a park employee who told us the recreation area was fine, it burned right up to the fence and was stopped there. However, the trail is damaged with debris.  They're working on it.  The park on the other side of the river, that previously burned, is burned once again.  That will take some time to recover.

That burn was the Aubrey White fire.

The Aubrey White Fire broke out on July 6, 2025, burning roughly 40 acres along the Centennial Trail in Riverside State Park near the Bowl and Pitcher area. The fire triggered local evacuations, road closures, and minor structural damage. In August 2026, court records revealed that a suspect named Aaron Farinacci confessed to setting the Aubrey White Fire as part of a series of arson fires in the Spokane area.
That's the sociopath who set the recent fires.  He had been in jail in Arizona, served 10 years of a 12 year sentence for killing his father.  His father asked him to do the dishes and he killed him for it.  Some people just should not be out in society.

During the evacuation, I threw our helmets into a large bag, knocking my helmet mirror off in the process.  The mirror does not stay on this helmet very well, my last helmet was much better.  Anyway, it took more time than it should have to get it back on the visor.  This is what is should look like, please make a note of it.  It tends to defeat my spatial relations.

The insurance people were out in large numbers.  I took this on August 13.  Not sure when they got here, or how long they are staying.

Finally, there is this, a robot lawn mower.  It's like a roomba with blades.

That's about all I want to say.  47 is back to being a demented threat to the planet.   Everyday it just gets worse.  And yet, the republicans are just fine with it.

  1. There's a mennonite family here in town that grows three kinds of lettuce hydroponically so that's where I get my lettuce. We get donations at the food bank from both Walmart and HEB, lots of packaged salad some labeled Taylor Farms. It all goes in the trash. Make America Healthy Again RFK is doing exactly the opposite.

  2. I saw a mower like that when I was in Italy, of all places. I wonder how many of these food risks carry over into the UK food supply. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a mass recall like the ones affecting lettuce in the USA, but I'm sure we've probably had some.

  3. I've avoided the Taylor farms products here in Canada too. There was no recall but I figure just in case. However, I did not know that they are also sold with different name brands. Currently, we're eating the lettuce from the garden...though my daughter was a little squeamish after finding a cut worm in the leaves I was washing.
The shitshow that is the current US administration boggles the mind. I keep thinking it can't get worse, but yes, yes it can. Pushing aside an ally in South Korea for his dictator buddy in North Korea, and threatening to bomb Oman is ludicrous!

  4. The Food Chain contamination is all preventable but we all know why it's not now... he's gutted so much that was protection for the People and the Planet. He simply can't FOAD soon enuf since nobody is stopping him, our Government has proven itself impotent against a Despot put into Power. I'm sorry your area has had a Psycho committing Arson, he should have Served his whole 12, but, that would only have set him Free Two Years later... and people like him, I agree, should never be let back into Society, he's clearly unwell to a degree he should be in a Mental Institution for his Lifetime and has proven he is too dangerous to be unsupervised ever.

  5. Thank you for that information, Alison. The corruption is so blatant. Taylor Farms is a major donator to republican cause. They were identified as a source. The following day, it was reported that the test was a false positive.

    We are on our own.

Side note: Drinking orange koolaid has been linked to explosive diarrhea of the mouth. Just a thing I have noticed.

  6. Since the outbreak, I have avoided all lettuce with the exception of what I grew in my veggie garden. The US food products are no longer reliable. We are on our own. I had not heard about the egg problem. Thank you for detailing that.
    2028 can't come soon enough.
    Per Reuter's, DT's disapproval rating is 64%.
The arsonist is a full-on danger to society. Why he was not identified as that in the first place is a big downfall in the system. Maybe now, he'll be put away.

  7. I didn't know about all those brands being Taylor Farms, especially the organic ones! I just checked what we have (Organic Girl) and also carrots from Canada (ATV brand), whew. I can't stop eating salads, but have been buying the heads from our local food co-op instead of the grocery store. Barry grows most of our greens, but in the summer we do have to buy lettuces; it's just too hot to grow it here. Thanks for the information!

That looks like a Take-a-Look mirror, which I didn't even know could be attached to one's helmet. I used those for years on my glasses. Now I have a rear-view on the end of my handlebars. It took some getting used to, but I like it now.
