Sight Seeing in Prague - Day 5

We took the metro to Vysehrad today.  They have the cemetery in Prague.  I know, it sounds awful, but it's an amazing place.  It sits on a hill amid an area that was a fortress in the past.  Royalty used to live there until they moved to the Prague Castle.  This is a gate into the compound.  This area has been occupied since the 8th century.

One of the doors into the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.  Unfortunately there was a wedding going on and we couldn't go in.  Lonely Planet says it's full of frescoes that should not be missed.

The grave yard is an amazing collection of headstones.

I love this statue.

The art of many of the headstones is also beautiful.

The niches in the walkway that surround the cemetery are also beautiful.

Walking back to the metro, we went through what we think is a convention center. Interesting graffiti.

We metroed over to the memorial for the six Czech paratroopers who were sent to kill Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi General that Hitler sent to Czechoslovakia to suppress the Czech resistance to the German occupation.  They managed to kill him, but then in turn were trapped in a church, and ultimately they all died.  The Nazis took revenge by killing everyone in two villages and turning the buildings into dust.  WWII gives us such a legacy of sadness.

Then we visited the Dancing Building.  People call in the Fred and Ginger building because it looks like Ginger is leaning into Fred.  It's one of the few, if not the only, new building in the old part of Prague.  I like it.  One of the architects was Frank Gehry, who also designed the Experience Music Project in Seattle.

OK!  That was a whirlwind recap of today.  I'm tired.  Tomorrow we depart the apartment and return to Hotel Adria.  The day after that we commence the Prague to Budapest bike tour.  We'll be back out in the boonies, so internet may be spotty.

    1. He has such a definite style about his work. For a modern building, it almost meshes with the old ones around it.

    1. I'll work on that on this tour. I couldn't get ahead of anyone on the last tour. They were too fast, it was just me and the sweep rider.
