Back in Spokane

We're home as of yesterday afternoon.  Yesterday was not a terrible drive.  The bulk of it was on interstate freeways.  As I have previously stated, our initial plan was to go to Baker City for the night and then drive to Spokane.  Hah!  Double HAH HAH HAH.  Both Baker City and La Grande, Oregon are nothing more than wide spots in the road.  Lodging would have been difficult, and food consisted of McDonalds or Zip's hamburger drive-in.  We dodged a bullet by staying in Caldwell.  The La Quinta wasn't great, but it would have been worse in Oregon.  In the future, if we take that route, we'll need to shoot for Pendleton.

I84 has a fair amount of up and down.  There is a 6 mile 6% down grade heading west toward Pendleton.  It's not bad in a car, it used to scare the snot out of me in the RV.

Photos from yesterday's drive.

Today we have spent the day unpacking.  It was actually worse than I thought it would be.

Well, I am not yet done putting stuff away, so I will now get back to it.

  1. Nice to be back although unpacking is my least favorite activity of a trip. We stayed in Baker City once at the Geiser Grand Hotel. A beautiful place but not much to do. The sidewalks roll up at 5 or so. Our kids were very bored!

    1. We were in Baker City in 2016 to see the Oregon Trail museum. We wanted to look at the stained glass ceiling and the guy behind the desk was very officious and told us we had to be guests or having dinner. He actually yelled at three ladies who were walking towards it. I had forgotten the hotel was there, we were in an RV then.

    2. That's the ceiling in the hotel, not the museum.

  4. Welcome home! There is a grade like that coming off the mountain (Adirondacks?) that I drove often and remember.

  5. Whew, glad you made it home safely. Not a fun transit, especially the extra cost of two non-refundable hotel nights. I do remember the days of full-time travel when we did it before buying our motorhome, and the hotels were always a crapshoot. Some of the expected nice ones had issues, like a noisy hall full of sports teams just when we happened to stay, and some that we thought would be so-so ended up being quiet, clean, and pleasant. Beds ranged from horrific to terrific. We ate at Subway so many times I was sick of it, but at least it was somewhat healthy compared to many alternatives. I don't miss those days. Hope all is well back in Spokane and you're all settled in by now.
