Hike and No Dove Joy

More yellow!  We were up and out early for an exuberant hike.  We took the trail up towards the ridge, but turned off before getting on the really steep part.  The vegetation is really overgrown on the upper trail and we're afraid of snakes being in the bushes.  I'm not really sure where they hang out, but I don't want to find out the hard way.  It was enough, we got back about 10:30 and it was already pretty warm.

And one more cactus......

The reciprocating saw is a good thing.  We used it on a few more dead branches on trees, and it's a lot faster than the pruning saw.  They're too big for the skill saw, so this was a good purchase.

The dove nest is gone.  We went to see if they were on the nest and there are no longer any eggs.  There aren't any shells on the ground, either.  We wonder if a hawk came in and ate them all.  Life is hard when you're a prey item.

  2. any number of things could have eaten those eggs. we had a wren build a nest in our garage one year with three little eggs. I found one two smashed on the ground and the one in the nest had been punctured. not eaten just destroyed by another bird I guess not wanting competition.

  3. Aw crap, bummer about the dove eggs. Not as tragic as the two dead baby birds I had to pick up in our yard the other morning. They were very young and close to the area where grackles are nesting, so I assume they died and parents threw them out of the nest. Didn't have feathers yet, just pink skin. So sad. Nature is so cruel!

  4. We lived in Phoenix for a number of years. Springtime in the desert is surprisingly beautiful. Your pictures remind me that I miss it.
