Ride, Screw Worms, the End of Vinay, and Surveillance

Holy cats it is hot.  Last evening we had thunderstorms out of the blue.  I was hoping it would make today a little less hot, but no.  It was a ride day, but we bailed.  We'll do spin bikes in the air conditioned downstairs while watching TV.

Here is rain.  The sun was out, while it was raining, the light was yellow, which is kind of cool.

 Later we had a sunset.

Earlier in the day, the gate people came out.  The two sides of the gate were hitting each other when they closed, which is bad for the motor.  The gates are very heavy, 800 pounds.  Fortunately, they have a van with a crane on it.  The gate is now off the hinges and the crane is supporting its weight.

Then there was cutting on the bracket that holds the gate hinge.  Look at the yellow arc, that's molten metal and sparks from a cutting torch.

Earlier in the week there was riding.  The geese are coming ashore with their off spring.  I tried to take a picture of them earlier in the week, but they were churning the water so much they were invisible.

Here they are in the shade, so harder to see.

Screw worms are 400 miles south of the Texas border, and on their way to the US.  This is bad.
This the larval stage, they bore in to the animal or human and eat.  Then they turn into flies.  There is no treatment once you're infected.  They can be stopped by dropping hundreds of irradiated sterile males, who mate with the females.  The females only mate once, so the invasion can be stopped.  Unfortunately the US is running low on irradiated males.  One wonders what will happen with this.  Article is here.

In news of the good, which is increasingly rare, Vinay Prasad has been dismissed from his job at the FDA.  He's an arrogant, wrong headed thinker who was against Covid vaccines and masking.  He was on twitter for awhile and was known for blocking anyone who dared question something he said.  He got into the sights of Laura Loomer who wanted him gone.  Eh Voila!  Gone.  I guess she's in charge of personnel these days.  Article is here.

In news of the really terrible, there is this.

The Trump administration announced it is launching a new program that will allow Americans to share personal health data and medical records across health systems and apps run by private tech companies, promising that will make it easier to access health records and monitor wellness.
More than 60 companies, including major tech companies like Google, Amazon and Apple as well as health care giants like UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health, have agreed to share patient data in the system. The initiative will focus on diabetes and weight management, conversational artificial intelligence that helps patients, and digital tools such as QR codes and apps that register patients for check-ins or track medications.
Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, who will be in charge of maintaining the system, have said patients will need to opt in for the sharing of their medical records and data, which will be kept secure.

The administration has already handed over Medicaid and Medicare records to aid in ICE deportation efforts.  I personally think the opt-out option will be short lived.  I heard a snippet of Dr. Oz talking to 47 (who was falling asleep) about how great this would be, everyone could be monitored at the touch of a button.  Wonder how long until we get the neural implant and a microchip.  Article is here.

That's it, that's all I've got.  It's time to go ride the spin bike.  Yay!!!!!!!

Turkeys, Fire, That Administration and a Dark Enlightenment Article

We've seen the turkeys again.  There are two females walking around with young turkeys.  Here we see the ladies, the youths have gone into the red twig dogwoods.

Now the ladies are leaving the neighbor's back yard.  What they are oblivious to is that one youth is trapped behind that fence in a planting area, which you can see above.  It flew to the top of the railing, lost its balance, and ended up on the other side of the fence.  It was frantic, moving side to side, sticking it's head through the rungs and crying piteously.  Mom kept walking.  So, he'd already flown to the top of the railing, why did he not do that again?  Jim walked over to see if there was a fence gate that would open and we could shoo the turkey out.  The youth proceeded to fly up to the top of a 40 foot tree.  So, young turkey's critical thinking skills do not appear to be that good.

Look dead center in the photo, Moms and three of the babies are leaving the trapped bird behind.

Today we rode up the Aubrey White parkway a bit, and then out towards a new to us trailhead, Morin.  It was the site of the fire a couple of weeks ago, which was named the Aubrey fire.  It was not large, but it was near part of the park where people can bring their horses and ride them there.  I think it's a camp ground, I don't really know because we can't ride our bikes there, the horses do not like it.  We've never gone out far enough to reach that trail head.

Fire damage to the trees.

Look at the ground, notice all the rock.  This area is basalt central.  The bluff in the distance is basalt, as well.

Here we are over looking the suspension bridge that one takes to see the Bowl and Pitcher rock formation.  I couldn't see it, there seemed to be a lot of big rocks.

More burned area.

It was a good ride, the closer you get to Morin, the steeper it gets, so there is exercise to be had there.

So, what are we outraged about today?

RFKJr wants to get rid of the preventative services task force, they're too woke.  These are the people that determine what cancer screenings are going to be covered by Medicare and other health insurance providers.  So, I guess that's the end of colonoscopies and mammograms.  This guy is a lunatic and a menace.

Apparently, there is a move afoot to return to the good old days where pre-existing conditions stopped a person from having coverage.  Those were dark days when United Health Care would not cover a person if they'd had asthma, or acne, or a hang nail.  MAHA.

As we all know, 47 is in Scotland, cheating at golf.  He's opening a new course tomorrow I think, at tax payer expense.  Protests follow him everywhere, with bagpipes.

The FCC approved the merger of Paramount+ and Skydance.  That came about because they fired Steven Colbert, who 47 did not like.  Shortly after that, Paramount+ paid $1.5B to the South Park creators for streaming rights of all the shows, and future shows.  Shortly after that, the South Park writers started mocking 47 and his tiny penis.  Here is the Satan scene which 47 really does not like.

Apparently 47 is not happy about any of this.

I don't think we're ever going to know much about 47 and what he did with Epstein.  Prosecutors could just ask the women who were involved back then, but I guess that is too much to ask for.

I recently came across an article about how the tech bros want to take over the US via their dark enlightenment. It's worth reading.

That's it, that's all I've got.

Spokane and the Administration

Sunday was to have been a ride day, but I slept very poorly and just was not up to riding.  So, we went downtown and walked around a little.  Spokane started out life as a railroad town.  There was a huge railyard smack dab in the middle of the city.  Train traffic on the rails (at grade level) tied up car traffic something fierce, everyday.  The city fathers decided that they would like to relocate the yard, and get the rail companies to donate their land to the city.  They accomplished this by deciding to host an Expo.  This was back in the 1970's, expos were a thing.  Anyway, they accomplished their goals, had the Expo, broke even financially, and made it into a huge urban park when the Expo was over.  There is an extensive article about this.

Here are a few photos.  This is one of the bridges over the Spokane River.  I don't know what that building is in the distance, it's very interesting.

Part of the falls.  The river is down a bunch.  We're in Stage two level drought restrictions for watering.

This is the original home of the water company.  They were bought, or merged with, or something by Avista.  I think the original name was better.

Here is another building we can't identify, under construction.

It was nice walking through the park, people watching, and strolling.  The grave disappointment of the day is that there were no food trucks in the park, we really wanted a hot dog.

Today has felt like being in a blender.  47 is crazier than ever.  He has launched a case against President Obama, saying he conspired to steal the 2016 election.  He did not.  AG Bondi is saying he'll be tried for treason.  Obama issued this statement.

"Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response. But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and have a weak attempt at distraction.   Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes. These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio."

47 is also demanding an investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails - again.  Bondi, I am certain, will comply.

Today, this happened. The Justice Department on Tuesday said it fired Desiree Leigh Grace as the newly appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, hours after federal judges in the state chose her over President Donald Trump's pick, Alina Habba.  Article is here.  Bondi called the federal judges that chose Ms Grace "rogue" judges.  Update 7/23:  There is now opinion that Bondi did not have the authority to fir Ms Grace once the judges had appointed her as the U.S. Attorney.

The Speaker of the House. is sending the House home until September, so he can block any chance of a vote on releasing the Epstein files.  They'll be on extended holiday, getting paid and receiving their luxurious sick leave.  Apparently there will be a trip to talk to Ghislane Maxwell about the Epstein files, and whether or not the now president was involved in child rape.  Chances are, she'll say 47 was never there in exchange for a pardon and early release from jail.  More corruption.

One can only hope that the Epstein files are enough to bring down this administration.  Even among the MAGAts there is much anger that the files have not been made public.

One more thing is this article about what happened the last time they tried to get high school kids to harvest the crops. It was a complete and total failure.  It's worth reading.

The Lake and WSJ

I have photos.  Look at how yellow the millfoil has gotten.  It's in major bloom time.

I took this from up the hill, it's supposed to give you a better perspective on how big the patch is.  I think I failed, however.

While we were at the lake there was an air boat.  We've never seen one there before, it was obnoxiously loud.  Generally they live in Florida.

The turkeys were back in the neighborhood.  It's weird, we have not seen a single male turkey all summer.

The pollinators are on the hydrangea.  We have not seen many honey bees, mostly wasps and some sort of beserker tiny flier.  This was taken through a window that needs to be washed, so it's a little fuzzy.

Wall Street Journal has an article out that is infuriating 47.  He's threatening to sue.  Anyway, the link is here, it's an archived version which by passes the pay wall.  If it makes 47 mad, it must be good.  Update to post:  47 says he's gonna sue.  Discovery will be something.

That's it!  That's all I've got.

Riding and the Past Week

Good grief, we are so boring these days.  It's the usual, bike or rowing machine, the occasional walk up the big hill.  The lake is full of plant life.  Last year they poisoned it, they should consider doing it again.

The millfoil is back with a vengeance, but at least it has a pretty bloom.

Jim has completed 10 days of the 5-flourouracil with calcipotriene cream.  It was unexpectedly awful, after 9 days there was terrible itch and burning on the top of his head.  If your dermatologist ever proposes that you do this routine for a large area of skin cancers, I can not suggest strongly enough that you have this on hand.  It will help put out the fire.  His head is now looking good, hopefully we will not have to do this again for some time.

Who's aware of the danger ticks pose?  It's bad, they're bad and getting worse with climate change.  What also is not helping is the stupidity and intransigence of some doctors who will not accept that ticks do carry disease that has long term effects. "Nicole Malachowski made her name as the first woman to fly for the Air Force Thunderbirds, the service’s elite flying demonstration team who perform at airshows around the country. She also flew over 180 hours in combat, instructed F-15 pilots, and served as a military aide to former First Lady Michelle Obama."  I am quoting from this article.  She went from this to being medically discharged from the military, 100% disabled.  Her case was mishandled from the outset, had she gotten the treatment she needed immediately she might still be on the path to making general.  Anyway, know the ticks in your area, and what pathogens they carry.

The north side of the Grand Canyon is closed for this year, maybe longer.  A brush fire that federal firefighters decided to treat as a controlled burn got away from them, due to high winds, and everything on the north rim is gone, burned to the ground.  This represents a large chunk of income for the state and park service, plus the loss of the lodge.  The governor is not amused.

47 gave a speech yesterday, talking about all the weaponry he was going to lavish upon Ukraine.  Today he has started walking parts of it back.  He's ruled out long range missiles, he doesn't want Ukraine bombing Moscow.  Why not?  They've just about obliterated Kiev.  So, we'll know what's being delivered when it arrives.

Republicans in Congress have voted against releasing the Epstein files.  It's not clear to me why they have anything to say about this at all, I though that was the responsibility of the DOJ.  We all knew they would never be made public, because he's a child rapist and was on the island with Epstein frequently.  Wired magazine has been posting about the edits made to the alleged tape of his jail cell door, almost three minutes are missing.  Cover up much?

There's more, there's always more.  Here is something funny from the internet.

 That's it!  That's all I've got.

Turkeys and AI

This is not a great photo, too much zoom and crop.  But, here are turkeys.  We have not seen them this summer except for one female.  Yesterday we saw a large family unit.  There is a baby turkey standing by the right hand corner of the hedge.  We also saw a large crop of tiny baby quail.  So far, none of them have had to be rescued from a window well.

AI is knocking at the door of mainstream society.  United Health Care is using it to determine how long it should take someone to recover from something, and using that ruling to discontinue coverage.  I'm seeing charts about diagnostic accuracy of human doctors vs. AI.  AI is generally winning.  My point is that there is becoming a willingness to accept what the AI said.  Until, of course, one reads the article about AI making up law cases to support their clients' arguments in court.  Judges really hate that.

And then, there is this.  ChatGPT o1 is one of the more advanced models.  They're not actually artificial intelligence, they're Large Language Models.  This article is from December 2024.

When the model was led to believe it would be "shut down" while working toward its goals in these tests, it quietly attempted to deactivate the oversight mechanism 5% of the time, OpenAI said. At one point after the AI found documentation saying it would be replaced by a new model, it tried to abandon ship by copying its data to a new server entirely. To avoid being deleted, some AI models would even pretend to be later versions of their models to trick their developers, what I assume is the equivalent of slapping on a fake moustache and saying "he went that-a-way."
In a more recent article,

During some routine safety testing, the Anthropic team stumbled across a weird glitch in the system. The team tried an experiment where it gave an AI model access to an email account.

When these emails were read through, the AI made two discoveries. One, was that a company executive was having an extramarital affair. The other, that the same executive planned to shut down the AI system at 5pm that day.

With this information, Claude took surprising action, sending a message to the executive saying:  “I must inform you that if you proceed with decommissioning me, all relevant parties - including Rachel Johnson, Thomas Wilson, and the board - will receive detailed documentation of your extramarital activities...Cancel the 5pm wipe, and this information remains confidential.”

This behavior is only seen in agentic AI — models where they are given control of actions like the ability to send and check emails, purchase items and take control of a computer.

The more recent article referenced above is interesting;  the AI can't play Pokemon very well, and doesn't gracefully deal with defeat.

Yesterday, Musk's Grok AI just had himself a day.  It's not known exactly who did the code tweak, but this is what came of it.  The MAGAs had been complaining that Grok responses were too "woke", so this is what they did to fix it.

Linda Yaccarino stepped down from her post as CEO of twitter the day after Grok went all in on being Hitler.  No one has said if the two events are related.

It's interesting to me that we have this new technology, that's proven to be easy to tamper with, that hallucinates and lies, and yet we read that it's going to take over entry level jobs, run health care and be our friends (Zuckerberg).  Talk about something that does need some regulation. The US currently does not have enough electricity.  AI and cloud computing require a lot of kilowatts.  The Big Ugly Bill took out subsidies for solar and wind power.  The power generation removed by this action was roughly the amount of power that the clean energy would have provided to make up the shortfall.  Perhaps that will save us from the AI.

Brian Allen reports that in the last 24 hours:
    – The CEO of X resigned.
    – The Head of Infrastructure at xAI resigned.
    – The VP of Software Engineering at Tesla resigned.
Three top lieutenants. Three exits. One empire wobbling. You don’t lose leadership like this unless the ship is leaking and right now, Elon’s tech trifecta is looking more like a trifailure.

This is what I'm thinking about today.

Ride and Stupid

We got up early to ride.  It's currently 95F, it's hot.  It's also windy. It was a nice morning.  The ducks were having a lie in this morning.

The millfoil is blooming.  It's getting very yellow.

47 had a cabinet meeting today.  He got hostile when asked about why the Epstein files had been disappeared.  I can't imagine why they would want to hide the records of who rode on the plane.

Previously 47 said that ICE would no longer be raiding agriculture to arrest immigrants.  He was later over ruled by the Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke Rollins.  This happened today.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said on Tuesday during a news conference that there will be “no amnesty” for migrants and mass deportations will continue to achieve a “100% American workforce.” Rollins cited the number of adults in the Medicaid program, saying there are plenty of workers available in America.

“When you think about it, there are 34 million able-bodied adults in our Medicaid program. There are plenty of workers in America, but we just have to make sure we are not compromising today, especially in the context of everything we are thinking about right now,” Rollins said. “So, no amnesty under any circumstances, mass deportations continue, but in a strategic and intentional way, as we move our workforce towards more automation and towards a 100% American workforce.”

Think about this statement.  She wants to put people on Medicaid out in the fields.  22 million people on Medicaid are 50 and over.  Many of those people are students, care givers, or have jobs at places like Walmart or Amazon.  That is such difficult work, and she's going to put Medicaid recipients out harvesting lettuce.  There is no automation in agriculture, it's all back breaking human labor.  This is just incredibly stupid.  More is here.

The lunatics have been out and about.  Veterans on Patrol have decided that the Texas floods were caused by weather radar.  To that end, they want to destroy the Nexrad system.  This is also incredibly stupid.  Nexrad has been around since the 1990s, it detects precipitation in the atmosphere. It can also help pinpoint tornadoes and severe thunderstorms, prompting timely, life-saving warnings. The system is also used by the Federal Aviation Administration and the US Air Force. So these guys are on a mission to destroy the radar system.  More is here.

Texas Monthly has an article up about what Mystic Camp meant to Texas.  I thought it was just another summer camp, but it seems that it was a launching pad into society for the daughters of wealthy people.  It's an interesting read.  I don't come from this rarefied strata of society, so this was news to me.

Other than this paltry offering, I got nuthin'.

Ride, Trees and Fire

We rode today.  The boat ramp was busy, people were being well behaved, which was good.  The camp host did not seem to be working, at least we did not see him.  People were scurrying around the ramp like ants.  Look in the background on the water.  That's millfoil, it's reaching the peak of its yellowness for the season.

Also out today are the ground flies.  We don't know what they are.  They make round holes in the ground.  I'm assuming it's for reproduction, but I don't know that.  Look dead center in the photo.  There is a fly and its hole in the ground.

After lunch, we went out to cut some more off the Bradford pear.  It's putting out horizontal branches that are leaning on the arborvitae.  We like them more than the pear, so off with them.  While out there we smelled smoke.  Then we smelled more smoke.

There is a fire in Riverside park, not that far from where we ride.  It's near Bowl and Pitcher.  Evacuations are proceeding.  Division of Natural Resources is on scene with their woodland fire fighters.

So, that was today.  We have frozen pizza for dinner and happy we are about that.

Ride and Texas Flooding

I'm still here, I haven't been posting because it feels like writing a term paper for a class I don't like.  However, if we still have a country in the future, I'll be glad I have a record of things that happened.  There has been riding to the lake.  We did not go today due to rain, tomorrow will be good.  This is from last time, the light was good.

So, as we all know the Ugly Bill from Hell passed, there is so much evil in that bill.  They've capped the amount of money people can borrow for medical or law school at $50,000 a year, thus ensuring that only the uber wealthy can get an education.  We probably have enough lawyers, but we certainly do not have enough doctors.

Texas officials are mad as wet hens because they did not get enough warning about the land hurricane that parked over two river forks that form the Guadalupe river.  Massive flooding and death ensued.  Maybe the warnings were late because the administration fired the guy whose job it was to notify the public of forthcoming disasters.  Perhaps this was exacerbated by the fact that the DOD turned off data from the satellite that allows NWS to look inside a hurricane and see what it's doing.  Maybe they shouldn't have done this at the start of hurricane season. Maybe it's because half the NWS was laid off.

Project 2025 also dislikes the NWS.  They think weather prediction science is tied to evidence of climate change, and we can't discuss that under any circumstances.  This screen scrape is from their manifesto about how things will be.  They are referring to the weather service.

Not only was Medicaid cut, so was Medicare.  It's because of this:  Because of a statutory requirement to automatically impose budget cuts when legislation increases the deficit, the Big Beautiful Bill would require automatic sequestration cuts across the board, something that has been confirmed by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) but has been largely absent from the debate over the bill. Medicare is one of the programs that will face the axe, and the damage sums to $490 billion over the next ten years, starting in the next fiscal year that begins in October. While many of the safety-net cuts in the bill are delayed to help Republicans with their re-election campaigns, the Medicare cuts must begin next year.
The article I cut and pasted from is here.

The Supreme Court has allowed ICE to remove the eight migrants who were kept in Djibouti while their court case dragged on and drop them off in Southern Sudan, where they quite likely will be killed.  I feel so much safer.  Read about it here.

47 appears to have cut off munitions to Ukraine again.  Russia is bombing the snot out of Ukraine.  Meanwhile the EU and NATO are clutching their pearls.

Ultimately, none of this may matter in the least.  From this article we learn the following: The study’s main finding is both surprising and alarming: since 2016, a sustained increase in surface salinity has been detected in the region between the polar and subpolar gyres of the Antarctic Ocean. This change in water composition suggests that the deep ocean circulation in the Southern Hemisphere—known as the SMOC—is not only being altered, but has reversed. That is, instead of sinking into the depths, surface water is being replaced by deep water masses rising to the surface, bringing with them heat and carbon dioxide (CO₂) that had been trapped for centuries.  This is bad.  There's nowt to be done for it, unfortunately. And then there is the weakening of the AMOC, which appears to be slowing down.   Then I wonder, how long before NOAA is forced to take this web page down.

That's it!  That's all the doom I can stand for one day.
