Who watched the Amy Barrett hearings today?  No?  Me neither, she sounds like a chipmunk on helium and she refuses to commit to anything.  RBG voiced her support for reproductive rights clearly during her hearing, but Barrett just weasel words out of everything.  The brief clips on twitter were about all I could stand.

However, something wonderful was said today by Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI).  "When you find hypocrisy in the daylight, look for power in the shadows.”  He gave a 30 minute master class on dark money and its effects on the Supreme Court.

Here is a short version of the talk which you can find here

If you find that sufficiently interesting, you can listen to the seven-ish minute version here.

Here is a picture of him. The arrow button keeps ending up on his face, so it's difficult to get a good image.

If you are sufficiently interested, Senator Whitehouse's full remarks are on youtube, and you can find them here.

He's really impressive, given the spawns of Satan that currently masquerade as statesmen.

During the primaries, we were introduced to Mayor Pete, of South Bend, Indiana;  a really smart guy who someday will make a great president.  The Guardian, a paper in the UK, has renamed him Slayer Pete due to his interviews with Fox talking heads and his ability to talk circles around them.  Below are his extemporaneous remarks on why originalism is an unreasonable position to take, including a quote from Thomas Jefferson.  These remarks were part of an interview with Jonathon Capehart.  The video is here

Barrett's defense of originalism is just contorted logic.  The slaveholders who wrote the constitution also did not allow women to vote.  Changing those things required amendments to the original document.

Here is one of the Fox interviews.  Apparently the orange wombat heard them, he was making fun of the Slayer at tonight's Covid super spreader event. This is short and is just hysterical.

  1. Sorry, I watched the first two videos and was enlightened by them. But I can't imagine that there is any light in anything theRUMP has to say. I just can't stomach the third.

  2. of course those rat bastards who care nothing for our actual democracy are going to pass her. her religious preferences aside, she is simply not qualified to sit on the SC. she's only been a judge for three years. but they think/know she will do their bidding. our only recourse, once we have the WH and both houses of Congress, will be to expand the court. the only reason there are 9 justices is because at the time there were only 9 district courts. now there are thirteen so it makes sense anyway to expand the court to 13.

  4. Go Mayor Pete! I had heard about that and hadn't seen it. Thanks for the link. Whitehouse was also very good and educational.

  5. I cheered for everything in this post! Sheldon Whitehouse was so impressive. And scant wait to vote for Mayor Pete someday, and AOC too. As for Barrett and her originalism, doesn't she realize she would not be allowed on the court by the founding fathers? I have no hope for her. Like Clarence Thomas, we will be saddled with her and Kavanaugh for decades.
