Yesterday we hiked. We went out the trail toward the big rocks. There are two huge, deep, washes on the way. The land rises and falls, the area is a foot hill of the mountain. It's interesting that once you cross the second wash, the desert changes. It's greener and there is more plant life.
On the way back, we passed by what we think is the exit if you have gone behind the rocks, up to the ridge, and back down the unpleasant descent. We're going to start at the exit and walk it backwards, to see if there is a way off the trail, without going to the ridge.
The hike leaves the Tucson Estates trail when you see these. There used to be three cacti there.
Now there are only two. The arrows point at the stump of the dead one.
Coming back from the other direction, we used to see this cactus, indicating the walk was almost over.
Now he is this. The drought has been difficult for the desert.
This morning, the deer came to visit. She nibbled on the next door cactus flowers. Then she headed in to our back yard. After that, she went across the street and ate a large chunk out of their bougainvillea. They do not have much fear of us.
That red cactus she's standing by is about to bloom. Fortunately, she has not yet nibbled on it.
I'm not talking about that man today. Suffice it to say, today he signed an EO to close the Department of Education. Hegseth is still removing women and POC men from websites, to include Colin Powell, and is now sending "compliance officers" around the US to make sure only white men are represented on the web sites.
Cactus flowers are so pretty and delicate. I guess the deer have to make the best of what they can find - opportunistic feeders.
ReplyDeleteI love the Desert too, but the mighty Saguaro are indeed indicators that Climate Change is killing things in record numbers, they are struggling, those Ancient Ones, which is very concerning. Spring in the Desert is sublime visually. And, Yes, about this Regime... why are they even getting away with such things? Compliance Offers to ensure Women and POC are erased from History, next they will be wanting to do other things to us and I shudder to think what those could be!!!
ReplyDeleteWith the drought, I'm sure food is hard for the deer to come by, so they look for anything to eat. That might mean getting over their fear of humans.
ReplyDeleteI'm just shaking my head...how much worse can things get?
We had a statewide exceptional drought 10 or more years ago. Millions of trees died and forest fires across the state.
ReplyDeleteHow pathetic is Hegseth, so immature and unsure of his manhood that he can't tolerate the achievements of women and people of color.
It is not his immaturity and insecure manhood that is behind this stuff. If he hadn't have been given a cabinet position, he'd be quietly day drinking and making poor decisions that didn't affect the country.
ReplyDeleteThose fallen cacti look like they were on their last legs when you saw them alive. I suppose everything has a life span, but yeah, I'm sure the drought has been devastating.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful deer, though I wouldn't want it eating my plants!
