More on the Neighbor

The Junk King truck showed up bright and early yesterday. They brought out a few items, but then we saw the men standing in the street doing nothing.   The Junk King lady pulled up and asked what was the hold up - with a slightly exasperated tone of voice in use.  As we expected, the neighbor refused to let them take any more away.  So, I guess home improvement is now on hold.

The 26 foot truck is back on our reservation number.  Jim has been calling frequently to ensure it's still there and that no weirdness has happened in the mean time.  They also know about our two dozen moving blankets, so I'm less anxious than I was.

I guess it's time to start rolling up the rugs, and getting them ready to go.  I have to laugh at myself, they spent eleven years in storage, rolled, and I keep thinking "it's too soon, they'll flip up at the corners."  No, they'll be fine and it needs to be done.  So, back on our heads!

We've had some clouds, but nothing spectacular.

That's it, that's all I've got.

  1. I wonder what drives people to hoard like your neighbor. That bug has afflicted so many people. Looks like the packing is progressing. I drove a U-Haul truck from Chicago to Phoenix some 20 years ago now. I had a temporary work assignment in Chicago and was there for 2 1/2 years. I still had my house in Phoenix (Mesa actually) so What I brought back from Chicago wasn't as much as you will have so it was a smaller U-Haul truck. It was still an enjoyable adventure. I hope your trip is enjoyable too.

  2. I don't know, those clouds look pretty spectacular to me.

The only way they are going to clean out that house is to remove the neighbor and while he's gone, clean it out. if he was going to let that stuff go so easily, he never would have accumulated it. well, soon enough you'll be gone and it will be the people who bought your house that have to look at it.

  3. That first cloud formation is quite spectacular.
I spent thirty years with a pair of hoarders. It's an illness with many causes.

  4. Hoarding is a mental illness, and it isn't solved by just helping the hoarder clear the towering junk. I wish I knew how it is solved, so that someone I know and care about could be helped. I tried once, to help her clear a corner. It took 4 hours to clear one desk, and there were four full garbage bags at the end of it, and I suspect when I left she went and retrieved them from the basement instead of letting their contents go. I realized that day how overmatched I was, but I haven't yet figured out how else to be helpful. It is heartbreaking really. And it is definitely rooted in trauma.

  5. Well it sounds like you're getting away from this neighbor just in time!

  6. Seems like it's time for the neighbor's family to intervein. The neighbor needs help and trying to force it isn't likely to end well.

  7. Hoarding is rooted in trauma and an illness with no actual Cure that I know of, just management and tools that can be taught on how to moderate behaviors that cause the problems. I think perhaps so long as that Neighbor remains, that Community will be Dealing with it on a constant basis it seems. Glad you're getting the final push underway and getting this Move behind you.

  8. I would go loco with a hoarder across the street. It would bug the heck out of me if I could see or smell any of it. And they always seem to have innocent animals that certainly didn't ask to be a part of the situation! I know you'll be glad to leave that spot, even though your house looked lovely. Hopefully no hoarding neighbors in Spokane!
