Snow, Kestrels and Ice Pellets

When I got up this morning, I looked out at the mountains and saw snow.  We thought that was pretty cool, because it was up there and not here.

Then it snowed.  The temperature dropped and white stuff came out of the sky.  I hate when that happens.

After awhile, it stopped, the temperature came back up and there was some sun.  An American Kestrel perched on the agave flower spike for over an hour.  First he shook off the water, fluffed up and sat in the sun.  Later there was grooming.

They are really pretty birds.  They're also called sparrow hawks because of their ability to grab a small bird on the wing, kill it and eat it.

It's going down to 27 degrees tonight.  Actually 6 am tomorrow morning will be the coldest time, which I think is kind of weird.  One would think it would be the lowest around two or three, but no.  The first time we went out to cover the bougainvillea ice pellets were falling from the sky.  We tried again later, got sprinkled on with the wind up, but it's done now.  This is the only remaining plant that is cold sensitive, the rest are good to 20 degrees.

That's it! That's all I've got.

  2. snow does not delight me either. fortunately it only happens once every 5 or 6 years. good shots of the kestrel. we had a big bougainvillea at the city house. it froze once or twice but always came back.

  3. It must feel very bizarre to have snow. The desert really has to content with a lot of extremes, doesn't it?!

  4. I enjoy snow in small doses. So far we have only seen a few flakes in the sky, but they say we could get 1/2" to 2" tonight. I'll believe it when I see it. Nice Kestrel photos!

  5. Good for you. That's a large plant to cover. I remember struggling to cover mandevillas last May, in towels since I had no sheets. I looked over at my closet one day, at all the jackets and sweat shirts and thought "You dummy. You have a closet full of zippered plant covers!"

  6. Whoa - I never remember it snowing in Tempe while I lived there! I'm pretty sure snow in the desert is just wrong!

  7. Wonderful kestrel pix. I'd feel pretty aggrieved if I got snow in completely the wrong region. I resent it where I live even though it's expected.
